Thursday night a meteor entered the atmosphere of our earth; possibly some fragments ended up in the exchange area in Lower Austria. Several measuring stations registered at least one sonic boom from the celestial body.
A spectacular celestial event took place over the Czech Republic, Bavaria and Austria on Thursday evening. A meteor appeared as a fireball in the night sky and was even captured on camera.
“Czech astronomers assume that parts of it reached the ground above Austria,” says the website “Austria in Space”. The cosmic rocks could have fallen to Earth in the area between Lunz am See and Kindberg in Styria and could weigh up to four kilograms. That this seems very possible is also confirmed by the 14 seismic measuring stations of GeoSphere Austria.
Several measuring points registered celestial bodies
“Our measuring station in Mariensee am Wechsel recorded a sonic explosion in this area,” explains Helmut Hausmann of GeoSphere Austria. Seismic movements were recorded at various measuring points in eastern Austria. These can also be used to accurately understand the trajectory of the meteor.
Whether and where it actually landed cannot yet be confirmed. “But that would certainly be possible in the area around the change,” says Hausmann. “These kinds of events only happen once every four to five years, most recently in Kindberg in 2020.” Usually, however, these are just fist-sized chunks of rock falling to the ground.
