Complaints pile up – police warn flood victims: “Beware of looters”

Date:

Criminals want to shamelessly exploit the suffering of the people who have been severely affected by the floods. They search through the items that have been brought to safety in search of anything of value. The police in Lower Austria are receiving more and more reports of stolen devices.

Photos of white vans are currently piling up on social media platforms. The listings, which usually also include full license plates, warn of looters. Lawnmowers, bicycles and even drying equipment that were still fully functional would simply be taken and placed in vans.

“Report suspicious sightings”
“Yes, there are thefts here and there,” confirms the police, who have already tried to raise awareness among the population. “If you see anything suspicious, you should contact us immediately. We take this seriously,” emphasizes spokesman Johann Baumschlager.

The current emergency situation certainly makes it easy for criminals. The residents, who were badly affected by the flooding, had to carry their belongings out of the flooded rooms. Not everything is broken, but most of it has to be stored outside, at least temporarily. There it becomes an easy target for thieves, some of whom even break into properties to help themselves brutally.

Foreign bulky waste collectors
In any case, law enforcement patrols must be particularly careful when traveling in the affected areas, talking to citizens and checking suspicious vehicles. The first hits have already been made. However, they are not organized gangs, but mostly foreign bulk waste collectors who also travel regularly between Enns and Leitha. “Many people take the stuff with them because they think it is not a crime,” Baumschlager explains.

At the same time, the executive branch is also warning of fraudsters hoping to secure the business of a lifetime by offering overpriced services at the expense of flood victims.
