In mid-September, dramatic scenes took place in Judenau (Lower Austria). Due to the floods, the Schimmer family also had to move as much of the cellar and the ground floor as possible in time to provide safety from the threatening floods. The heavily pregnant Melissa also participated. Shortly afterwards, however, the first contractions began and an unusual rescue mission followed.
The floods throughout Austria caused numerous operations. In Judenau too, rescue workers had to undertake a difficult mission because the heavily pregnant Melissa suddenly gave birth prematurely. At the same time, the water was penetrating further and further into the family home. The cellar and the ground floor were already under water. Only being rescued upstairs could save the family from something worse.
Pregnant women taken to hospital by helicopter
Because the district that had been badly hit by the flooding was completely surrounded by water and was not accessible by vehicle, a helicopter had to come, which could be guided to the right house with hand signals. However, there was no possibility to land. The heavily pregnant Melissa had to go through the muddy water to the Christopherus helicopter, which picked her up in a hover and took her to the Tulln hospital.
Mother and child are doing well
Meanwhile, father-to-be Florian managed to get to the hospital without getting under water, so he could witness the birth and give Melissa the best possible support. Six weeks early, but still healthy and happy, little Noah was born around midnight.
Military personnel have been deployed since last week
The soldiers of the 1st Assistance Company of the 35th Panzergrenadier Battalion from Großmittel have been on duty in Judenau since last Tuesday and are supporting the residents affected by the flooding by, among other things, clearing out the cellars. There was also a lot to do at the Schimmer family’s home; some heavy equipment, left behind in the flooded parts of the house, had to be removed from the house.
They were all the happier that mother and child were healthy and happy despite the difficult circumstances.
“Given Noah’s extremely challenging start to life, the entire Tulln Assistance Command, especially the soldiers of Panzergrenadier Battalion 35, wishes the happy family all the best and a speedy recovery from the damage suffered,” the federal ministry said in a statement.
