Because a horse ate the neighbours’ lettuce plants, the Public Prosecution Service investigated the material damage. The owner was even called for the identification service.
“I think a horse is kicking me,” a woman from Upper Styria must have thought recently: her horse has been enjoying its existence in the pasture for years. Recently, however, there was a scandal: the neighbor’s delicious lettuce plants suddenly appeared in front of the ungulate’s nose. “You don’t look a gift horse in the mouth,” said the four-legged friend, who devoured the delicacy with relish and also left a few hoof prints in the destroyed bed.
The vegetable owner was furious. The story even went so far that the Leoben public prosecutor’s office investigated material damage. In fact, a police officer asked the owner of the green stuff villain by phone and text message to identify himself (fingerprints taken, photos taken), including an appointment and the remark that no legal advice was given and, if that was not the case, the district administration would be called in. The woman from Upper Styria called lawyer Marc Simbürger. He established gross negligence on the part of the police: “The failed attempt to take fingerprints from my client like a serious criminal was a completely excessive measure!” They also tried to prevent the involvement of a lawyer.
According to the police, everything happened correctly. Spokesman Heimo Kohlbacher: “The complaint was filed by the alleged victim. It was suspected that the owner of the horse had left her animal in bed after an argument. The identification process was supposed to have been carried out legally, but the woman did not comply with the request. The authorities then decided not to do so and the public prosecutor stopped the investigation.”
