According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are currently around 380 Austrians in Lebanon. Less than ten of them are travelers. Since October 2023, a travel warning has been in effect for the whole of Lebanon.
“We monitor the volatile security situation in Lebanon and evaluate it continuously, including in the Foreign Ministry’s crisis team that meets regularly,” a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
The Israeli army and the radical Shiite militia Hezbollah are currently engaged in heavy fighting. Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have so far killed more than 550 people, including 50 children and four medics. More than 1,800 other people have been wounded. Many residents of northern Israel have fled their homes since the war began almost a year ago. More than 30 flights to and from Beirut were canceled on Tuesday.
“Shooting can be heard 24 hours a day”
“The shelling can be heard, seen and felt 24 hours a day. We never know when the next explosion will hit us,” says Mireille Karaky, head of the International Aid Agency in Lebanon. Protection of civilians is being ignored, says director Stefan Fritz in a broadcast. According to the UN, the small Mediterranean country of Lebanon has taken in more refugees per capita and relative to its size than any other country in the world, including 250,000 Palestinians.
