Massive smoke development on Thursday evening in Einsiedl in the market town of Sieghartskirchen in Lower Austria: a pile of bulky waste that had accumulated after the recent flood disaster caught fire. The waste, which had been piled up to a height of seven meters, was ablaze and even the population warning system AT-Alert was activated.
Klaus Stebal from the Lower Austrian State Fire Service confirmed a report from the ORF state studio that there was massive smoke and an AT alarm was activated for the population to close their windows.
Use under heavy respiratory protection
According to Stebal, 15 fire brigades with 110 helpers were deployed. The spokesman reported an operation under heavy respiratory protection. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
Bulky waste on an area of 3000 square meters
The fire brigade was alerted at around 01:45, reports the Tulln district command. According to this information, the bulky waste was stored on an area of approximately 3,000 square meters on a company site. The pole was six to seven meters high. The helpers were also deployed with an excavator and a wheel loader to clear the waste and then extinguish it.
The district command points out that the fire brigade has been in constant action since the flooding. Shift changes are therefore necessary. In addition, the helpers should go to work in the morning.
In the morning, fire fighting operations were still ongoing.
