On Wednesday evening, an extensive police operation took place at a Rewe branch in Hungen (Giessen district, Hesse). A 43-year-old man entered a supermarket and attacked and injured two men. Police cleared the market and cordoned off the area; the perpetrator barricaded himself in the building.
The attacker is said not to have used a weapon, but was seen with a knife. A witness: “I went to Rewe and heard from the employees that there was a madman walking around with a knife (..) you wouldn’t believe that something like that could happen here in Hungen.”
Police forces and employees on site managed to clear the market while the perpetrator hid in the store.
According to Bild, a police spokesman explained that the attacker did not cooperate, which made the arrest difficult. At 10 p.m., a fire alarm went off in the supermarket, but there was no fire.
Around 23:00, the police intensified their measures and deployed special forces. After a thorough search of the market, the man was finally arrested.
