For holiday camps? – Hungary denies refugee camps near the border

Date:

The Hungarian government has denied that a refugee camp is being built near the Austrian border. The facility near the village of Vitnyéd will be used as a holiday camp for young people in the future, Hungarian Chancellor Gergely Gulyás said on Thursday evening.

The alleged refugee camp previously led to unrest and protests, including in Austrian politics. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) had threatened to impose stricter border controls if asylum seekers actually settled on the site of the former vocational school. The governor of Burgenland, Hans-Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), immediately announced that he would close the border crossings.

Until recently, refugee families from Ukraine lived in the affected area. After their move, the site was cordoned off and construction, renovation and furnishing work has been taking place since then. On Sunday, hundreds of people from the city demonstrated and demanded clear information. Vitnyéd is located just a few kilometers from the Austrian border in Seewinkel in Burgenland.

Minister: The camp would be in Brussels
The Hungarian government had already denied in mid-September that a refugee camp had been built near Austria. “If Brussels forces us to take in migrants, the refugee camp will not have to be built on the Austrian border, but on the Grand Place, the central square of Brussels,” said Minister Gulyás.

This summer, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) sentenced the Hungarian government to a fine of 200 million euros because migrants did not have effective access to asylum procedures. The government has not yet paid and is instead demanding money from the EU for migration policy. Prime Minister Orbán threatened to have asylum seekers brought to Brussels by bus.
