The second election for the office of president started on Sunday morning in Lithuania (see video above). As in the previous elections, favored incumbent Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte are pitted against each other.
About 2.4 million eligible voters are called upon to cast their votes. Nauseda clearly won the first round on May 12 with 44 percent, but did not achieve an absolute majority. The 60-year-old economist has been at the helm of the Baltic state since 2019 and has made a name for himself as a determined supporter of Ukraine.
The war was a central issue in the election campaign, highlighting its implications for national security and social policy issues. In Lithuania, as in Austria, the head of state has largely representative tasks, but also powers in the field of foreign and defense policy.
Second place Simonyte received 20 percent of the votes in the first round. The 49-year-old has been prime minister of a center-right coalition since 2020.
Polls close at 8pm local time (7pm CEST), with results expected on Monday evening. In Lithuania, elections are held every five years.
