Due to the heavy storms two weeks ago, many excursion destinations, hiking trails and parks in Lower Austria were severely affected and had to be closed. However, most of them are now open again and are looking forward to numerous visitors.
For example, the popular Johannesbach gorge in Würflach, which has been accessible again since Monday. “We were fortunate that only a few trees fell, but no bridges or walkways were damaged,” said department head Peter Samwald.
Many trails are accessible again on Semmering and on Rax and Schneeberg. Raxseilbahn and Schneebergbahn can be used without restrictions. However, the use of via ferratas is still not recommended, as there is an increased risk of danger from snow and wind. “We are still checking all routes,” said Christian Blazek, president of the tourism association.
The Höllentalbahn is not yet in use – it is closed until October 6 due to flood damage.
Almost all parks in Baden have already reopened. Only the upper spa park is still closed. Signs indicate the danger. “Unfortunately, it can take weeks before we have checked all the paths,” says city garden director Andreas Kastinger.
And the Myra waterfalls in Muggendorf are also easily accessible again. A warning for the entire Vienna Forest was lifted on Thursday. Yet large-scale closures are still taking place here. “Many trails are impassable due to fallen trees,” says Saul Ferguson of Vienna Woods Tourism.
The cycle path in Helental is heavily damaged
The Helenental cycle path between Baden and Heiligenkreuz was severely affected, especially between Baden and Sattelbach. “The asphalt has been broken in some places by the water masses and bridges have also been damaged,” said Christof Schöny, deputy mayor of Heiligenkreuz. It is not yet known when the popular cycle path will be fully restored. “We are still assessing the damage,” says Schöny, hoping to make the cycle path passable again in a few weeks.
