According to an assessment by the Ministry of Education, this year’s central high school diploma in German, mathematics and English delivered comparable results to 2021. Including the annual grade and any compensatory exams, more than 99 percent of AHS and HBO graduates have schools (BHS) have successfully completed German and English. In mathematics, 1.7 percent of both school types failed the written entrance exam. 98.3 percent successfully completed the anxiety course. That is 0.4 percent more than a year earlier.
As in the past two years, the annual figure has been included in the Matura figure in 2022. So if you had at least a three in your final certificate and got at least 30 percent of the marks on the written exam, you would get a four (or even three) in your Matura certificate despite the negative exam grade.
As if that were not enough, the negative figure could be corrected in early June in the so-called compensation tests. According to data from the Ministry of Education, more than nine out of ten high school graduates were positive even before the annual grade and the compensation test were taken into account.
The bottom line is that 99.4 percent of students at AHS this year have a positive Matura grade for English, 99.3 percent for German and 98.3 percent for Mathematics. In maths this means a slight increase compared to the previous year (97.9), in the other two subjects the pass percentages have in fact remained the same.
Compared to last year, there were only minor changes after the decimal point in the BHS. 99.4 percent of those who started the course passed the exam in German, 99.2 percent in English and 98.3 percent in applied mathematics.
More top marks than last year
There were also no major shifts in the “very good” category: slightly more top marks were awarded on the AHS in German (23.0 percent) and English (29.6) than in the previous year (22.3 and 22.3 respectively). 28.5), less in math (18.5; 2021: 21.8). At the BHS there was 17.0 percent in German, the same share as in 2021, in applied mathematics slightly more students obtained the best grade (13.5 compared to 12.9), fewer in English (23.2 compared to with 24.5).
Polaschek happy with ‘positive balance’
Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) was pleased with the “positive balance” and thanked the teachers for the good preparation. “The written Matura went smoothly and the students achieved good results despite all the challenges.”
