Pope Francis’ comments on the role of women at a Belgian university were met with great displeasure. As an honorary speaker at the university’s 600th anniversary, the pope philosophized about what a woman should be from his perspective.
In his speech he said: “Woman is fruitful reception, care, living devotion.” It’s ugly when a woman wants to turn herself into a man. “The woman is a woman and that is important.”
The Catholic university issued a surprisingly sharp rebuke to the pope: “UC Leuven expresses its incomprehension and disapproval of Pope Francis’ position on the role of women in the church and in society,” the university in Leuven, Wallonia said on Saturday.
All people should be able to develop at university and in society, regardless of their origin, gender or sexual orientation, the report said. The church should follow the same path.
Rector angry about statements
“UC Leuven can only express its opposition to this deterministic and reductive position,” the university said afterwards. Rector Françoise Smets told the German news agency that it is a fact that men can also take care of the family. “Women should be able to take responsibility outside of healthcare.”
Pope Francis is in Belgium until Sunday. Thousands cheered him on in Louvain-La-Neuve as they had done the day before in the Vlaamse Leeuw. At the end of his several-day stay, a mass is expected in a stadium; almost 40,000 believers are expected.
