The United Nations recalls that more than a thousand people have been killed in Lebanon and a million have been displaced. It asks the parties to “distinguish between military and civilian objectives.”
The United Nations warned on Tuesday of the risk of a “humanitarian catastrophe” in the Middle East due to the “expansion of hostilities” and stressed that the possibility of the situation “further deteriorating” is “real”, hours later that the Israeli army has unleashed a ground invasion in Lebanon.
“We are deeply concerned about the expansion of hostilities in the Middle East and its potential to plunge the entire region into a humanitarian and human rights catastrophe,” said Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office.
Throssell has reiterated that the consequences of the “armed violence” between Israel and the Shia party militia Hezbollah have already had “terrible consequences” for civilians and recalled that the Israeli bombing of Lebanese territory over the past two weeks more than a thousand dead and a million displacedincluding tens of thousands who have fled across the border to Syria. “Even before the recent escalation in mid-September, tens of thousands of homes in Lebanon had been damaged or destroyed by (Israeli) attacks,” he recalled. who explained that about 10% of Lebanese health centers are closed, some of them due to the material damage suffered by Israeli bombing.
In this sense, he highlighted that “41 medical workers have died and 111 have been injured since October 2023, with 14 deaths in the last two days” and added that in addition, 25 water supplies have suffered damage, which “affects almost 300,000 people.
“Schools and kindergartens are closed and about 300 of them have been converted into shelters. In northern Israel and some parts of the northern occupied West Bank, sirens have sounded and residents have been ordered to stay near shelters, limit your movements and avoid gatherings,” he noted.
Throssell has elaborated that “the impact of the escalation resulting from the rocket launches against Israel by the Houthis and the Israeli strikes in response (against Israel) Yemen) are also of concern” and noted that “all parties must do so A clear distinction must be made between military and civilian targets“.
