Wuhledar captured – Moscow conquers strategically important city in the east

Date:

According to pro-Russian military bloggers, Russian soldiers have completely captured the strategically important city of Vuhledar in eastern Ukraine. The Telegram channel SHOT also reported on Wednesday that the city in Donetsk was now under the control of Russian troops.

The information could not initially be independently confirmed. On Tuesday, a representative of Ukrainian regional authorities said Russian units had reached the center of Vuhledar.

In this video, Russian soldiers are seen waving the Russian flag on a public building in Vuhledar:

The conquest of Wuhledar is a milestone for Russia
The city was long considered a resistance fortress against the Russian invaders. The capture of Wuhledar, a coal mining town with a pre-war population of about 14,000, would be a milestone for Russia on its way to taking over the entire Donetsk region.

The controversial city is in ruins
The Russian Ministry of Defense initially did not confirm the capture of the city. The Ukrainian armed forces also did not comment on the situation in Vuhledar. The place is located at the intersection of the eastern and southern fronts, making it extra important for supplying troops from both sides. The city is also close to a railway line that connects the Russian-annexed Black Sea Peninsula of Crimea with the Donbass region. The city is heavily damaged by repeated attacks.

On Tuesday, footage showed Russian troops raising their flag on the roof of an administrative building in central Wuhledar. The area was partly in ruins. In autumn 2022, Russia annexed the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in the east, Zaporizhia in the center of the country and Kherson in the south.
