The new war front in Lebanon has already led to casualties in the ranks of the Israeli army. At least one special forces member was killed in gun battles between fighters from the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia and Israeli ground forces. The video above shows images of the area of operations cleared by the military.
According to media reports, the troops were ambushed near a tunnel system. Following this clash in the border town of Odaisseh, which Hezbollah initially reported, the Israeli army mourned the death of 22-year-old Captain Eitan Itzhak Oster.
Precision ammunition and close combat missions
According to Israel, the army continued its targeted operations to eliminate Hezbollah fighters and destroy their military infrastructure in several locations in southern Lebanon. In addition to bombing with precision munitions, the announcement also mentioned close combat operations for the first time. Airstrikes destroyed 150 Hezbollah targets: command centers, weapons depots and rocket launchers.
Hezbollah, in turn, spoke of the heavy losses inflicted on the infiltrating forces. Among other things, an IDF assembly point was attacked with several rockets. The information could not be independently verified.
Withdrawn after a short operation
According to the Lebanese army, Israeli ground forces violated the demarcation line known as the Blue Line and advanced about 400 meters into Lebanese territory, including near the village of Yaroun. The Israeli troops then withdrew.
Israel is also currently carrying out massive airstrikes against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Fighting between Hezbollah and Israel broke out again as a result of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 and the subsequent Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. Immediately after the Hamas attack, Hezbollah opened a second front against Israel with regular rocket attacks from Lebanon.
Is Israel attacking Iranian nuclear facilities?
Now the situation in the Middle East is escalating almost daily. On Tuesday, Iran fired nearly 200 missiles at Israel. The Iranian attacks were a response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during an Israeli airstrike on Friday, according to the Revolutionary Guard. Iran also accuses Israel of killing the head of the radical Islamist Hamas ruling the Gaza Strip, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran in late July. The Israeli government announced retaliatory attacks and could now take action against the country’s nuclear facilities and energy infrastructure.
