Kušej’s successor – Stefan Bachmann becomes director of the Burgtheater

Date:

The Swiss Stefan Bachmann (56), director of the Cologne theater since 2013, will be presented on Wednesday as director of the Burgtheater from 2024. “ZiB 2” reports this on Tuesday evening. Similar rumors were already circulating in the afternoon, after acting director Martin Kušej had withdrawn his application and shortly afterwards the announcement of the decision by State Secretary for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens) was announced for Wednesday.

Bachmann has had some Burgtheater experience as a director since 2005 (“The Wasteful”) – which also earned him two Nestroy Awards: 2008 for Best Direction (Wajdi Mouawad’s “Burnings” at the Academy Theater), 2012 for Best German-Language Performance (Elfriede Jelineks” Winter Journey” in the Academy Theatre).

Bachmann directed several theatres
He also has many years of management experience: from 1998 to 2003 he was a theater director in Basel and since 2013 he has been in charge of the theater in Cologne. His tenure was marked by the rebuilding and renovation of the desolate theater, the reopening of which was postponed for years. His current contract in Cologne actually runs until 2026.

The State Secretariat did not want to comment on the report on Tuesday evening. The official announcement of the new management of the Burgtheater from season 2024/25 should take place on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
