They go by the names “Dobby” and “Falco”. Their location is Vienna-Schwechat Airport and their sensitive sense of smell is more efficient than any X-ray machine. Whether it concerns snakes, chameleons, exotic birds or spiders – two German shorthaired pointer dogs sniff out everything before customs. The “Krone” was present at the training of the species protection dogs at the Schönbrunn Zoo.
With as many as 300 million olfactory sensory cells, dogs easily surpass the human nose. There’s almost nothing dogs can’t smell: drugs, explosives, truffles – even diabetes or malaria. The dog’s nose receives support from its olfactory brain, where the information coming from the nose is processed. There can be as many as fifteen thousand different odors per minute. People can do fewer than four in the same amount of time.
