Several suspicious packages in Amstetten led to a police operation in the Lower Austrian district town on Wednesday afternoon. According to police spokeswoman Manuela Weinkirn, the central square was secured over a large area and a ban was imposed by the district administration.
The complaint was about four suspicious packages that looked like mail and were found near various items in the main square, Weinkirn said.
Adjacent houses evacuated
In addition to the closure of the central square, the evacuation of neighboring houses was also ordered. Explosives experts and explosive detection dog handlers were busy investigating.
