The accused Formula 1 zampano Walter Wolf is on trial in connection with the Carinthian banking group and the Patria affair. Only recently has he been able to go back to work due to his health.
You lose track a bit: three defendants have to answer to the Viennese court in the umpteenth Hypo Alpe Adria trial. The prime suspect is ex-Formula 1 race team owner Walter Wolf. His role in the Patria affair – the payment of bribes to Slovenia to win an arms contract from the Finnish company Patria – also plays a role. To date, Walter Wolf has never appeared in court. His health made the 82-year-old unable to negotiate, but that has now changed.
Four charges
Prosecutor Bernhard Löw presents a total of four charges: Walter Wolf allegedly received payments from Hypo Alpe Adria – without getting anything in return. He also received a million euros from a general settlement for a failed Croatian hotel project. The million had already been pledged. An ex-lawyer is also accused of this. He allegedly released the money.
Memory loss from stroke
“I don’t remember very well. I had a stroke,” he explains the discrepancies in his statement. But he is sure of one thing: his mistake was to work with Hypo Alpe Adria.
The public prosecutor withdraws the charges in the Patria affair: four of the suspects have long been acquitted. Therefore, “under no circumstances should a conviction be expected.” A sequel will follow in July.
