One day before a hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on the war in Gaza and the accusations of genocide against Israel, a colleague of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly called for the burning of the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to radio station Kol Barama, MP Nissim Vaturi repeated what he had already posted on X (formerly Twitter) weeks ago, but then deleted: “Go burn Gaza now and nothing less!”.
The Likud politician was referring to the massacre by Islamist Hamas and other extremist groups on October 7, in which 1,200 people were killed in Israel. “They came and burned us, our children,” he said. When asked about the innocent residents of the Gaza Strip, he repeated his earlier statement, according to the Haaretz daily: “We saw their celebrations before the army came, and we saw their crocodile tears after the army came. I have no sympathy for such people.”
“No more innocents” in Gaza
According to Vaturi, there are no more civilians in the combat areas in the closed coastal strip. These were evacuated. There are still 100,000 people there, but he says there are no innocent people there anymore.
Vaturi is also deputy speaker of parliament. His comments caused a furor. Many users responded to the radio interview on social media. The timing of his words in particular sparked outrage. The hearing in the South African case against Israel starts on Thursday at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The South African government accuses Israel of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
