According to the health authority, around 70,000 residents have regained access to clean, safe drinking water since Thursday. The contamination trail leads to the west of Klagenfurt.
On Thursday, the health authority withdrew the recommendation to boil drinking water for much of eastern Klagenfurt – in addition to urban areas that had already been approved. In concrete terms, this concerns Ebenthal, large parts of St. Ruprecht, St. Peter, the eastern part of Völkermarkter Vorstadt and Welzenegg. This means that the drinking water can now be used again without any worries.
About 70,000 people in Klagenfurt will now have access to drinking water in the usual quality, as officially announced. However, parallel to the all-clear, the investigation into the flushing and its cause through sampling and system checks of wells and pumping systems would continue at full speed. At www.stw.at/trinkwasser you can check whether your home address falls in one of the approved areas.
Pollution: The path leads west
Officials assure that the results of the water samples show that pollution is continuously decreasing. Nevertheless, the washing and rehearsing would continue consistently. With the aim of releasing more parts of the city as quickly as possible and continuing to guarantee water quality in the already released areas.
In addition, intensive research is being conducted into the causes. But there are increasing suspicions that the source of the contamination lies in the west of Klagenfurt, more specifically in the larger area of Feschnig, St. Martin and Waidmannsdorf.
Free drinking water supply
The city, the STW and the armed forces will continue to provide free water to the exhibition center every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The supply would remain at the required level until drinking water could be consumed again without restrictions throughout the city.
