Train traffic near Rome was halted for a day because of a nail. Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has already identified the perpetrator.
It was a banal mistake in the early morning hours, but caused a public transport disaster: a nail accidentally driven into a power cable completely paralyzed the central stations of Roma Termini and Tiburtina for two hours.
The railway network fell into chaos
Electronic scoreboards failed, trains stopped and the entire Italian rail network was thrown into chaos. The consequences for tens of thousands of passengers were devastating: 35 intercity and high-speed trains were canceled and another 40 operated only partially. 54 trains were over an hour late. Thousands of people stood in despair at train stations, while some trains had to divert to alternative routes.
Cyber attack and sabotage excluded
Despite the problems, a cyber attack and sabotage are impossible. According to Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, the disaster is blamed on a private company that hit an important power cable on the route between Parco Prenestino and Roma Termini with a nail during renovation work.
The “Str92” company was immediately suspended by the Italian railway company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). There was a small compensation for passengers: in case of delays of 30 minutes or more, passengers receive part of the ticket price back. But it hardly makes up for the hours of waiting, often without clear information.
