Fright for a young woman in Haidershofen (Upper Austria): When she wanted to get her dog carrier from the storage room in her house, she was unexpectedly confronted by a wagging reptile. The 35-year-old had two similarly unpleasant encounters three years ago.
When Jasmin H. recently entered the drying and storage room of her apartment complex in Haidershofen (Lower Austria), she could hardly believe her eyes. There was a snake lying there in the bicycle trailer parked there, with which she wanted to transport her dogs “Yule” and “Dina”.
“That scared me,” the 35-year-old said. To ensure that the uninvited visitor could not escape again, the woman immediately closed the lid of the barrow with her presence of mind. She then asked Steyr snake expert Hans Esterbauer for help.
“I got there about twenty minutes later,” Esterbauer confirms. He already knew the location from an operation three years ago. “That was in October 2021 – also in the drying room. “Mrs. H. came across a smooth snake at the time, which I caught and removed,” said the snake expert.
Esterbauer opened the lid of the dog trailer and recognized a young, non-venomous Esculapian snake that had apparently taken up winter quarters there. The animal probably entered through a tilted window.
The batting expert caught the viper and released it back into the wild. “Because she did not behave aggressively towards me, I grabbed her with my bare hand and put her in a gunny bag.” The reptile was later released unharmed to a biotope in Steyr.
