Former Vienna marathon winner Samson Kandie (53) died in his native Kenya from injuries sustained in a brutal robbery. The Vienna City Marathon announced this on Sunday.
The 53-year-old was found seriously injured near his home by his wife and daughter on Friday and was immediately taken to hospital. According to the Vienna Marathon website, he succumbed to his injuries at the Real Hospital in Eldoret.
He was on his way home
The exact course of events and those responsible have not yet been clarified. But the police assumed it was murder. Vienna Kandie, the dead man’s daughter, said on television that her mother had asked Samson Kandie at 7:30 PM because she was already expecting him home. “He said he was on his way home. “We started wondering about that because Dad never came home late,” Vienna Kandie said.
During another call at 9 p.m., a strange voice answered Samson Kandie’s phone. “A man told us to go behind our house where we would find him.” Kandie was left strapped to the ground with serious injuries to her arms and legs – and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Kandie won the VCM in 2004 in the then course record of 2:08:35. He named his daughter, who was born shortly afterwards, “Vienna”.
