Russian journalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov has auctioned his Nobel Prize medal for $103.5 million. Proceeds from Monday’s auction in New York will go to UNICEF’s aid program for Ukrainian refugee children. A previously anonymous bidder was able to win the award for the medal by telephone.
Muratov is the editor-in-chief of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, which was forced to close in late March after being repeatedly warned by authorities about its coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year along with Filipino journalist Maria Ressa for his services to freedom of expression. In April, while on a train in Russia, Muratov was attacked with a mixture of oil paint and acetone, which he said caused a “terrible” burn in his eye.
Critical journalists often pay with their lives
A total of six journalists from Novaya Gazeta have been murdered in connection with their work since 2000, including investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.
