For its part, Russia has accused Ukrainian forces of bombing the nuclear power plant twice on Thursday, when the plant was disconnected from the power grid for the first time in its history.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is waiting for its experts to visit the Russian-owned Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, and given the situation with the two contenders, does not exclude the risk of an accident. The Russian defense ministry, for its part, accused Ukrainian forces on Friday of bombing the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant twice the day before with large-caliber weapons, a day when the power plant was disconnected from the Ukrainian electricity grid for the first time in its history.
The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has pointed out that, while “one should not be alarming”, one cannot downplay “a situation that is not” in relation to what is Europe’s largest nuclear complex, the subject of accusations crusades by Kiev and Moscow near the complex.
“The installation works, but with difficulties, so that in the current circumstances the scene of an accident cannot be excluded. There are continuous power cuts, problems with the fuel used…”, he specified.
Similarly, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has insisted that the situation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, is “extremely dangerous” and while Russia is in its facilities the threat of a nuclear incident is “very high”.
In his usual speech, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Thursday evening assured that Russia, with its action at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, Ukraine and all Europeans “one step away from a radiological disaster”.
