Lebanon offensive – Israel strengthens troops and warns the population

Date:

In the fight against Hezbollah, Israel is expanding its forces for the Lebanon offensive. According to the information, these still involve “locally limited and targeted operations in southern Lebanon”. The population there was urged on Monday to stay away from the coastal areas.

The warning, issued in Arabic, covered both beaches and boats sailing south from the Awali River. The Israeli Navy will soon launch “an operation against Hezbollah,” it said. The Awali River flows into the Mediterranean Sea about halfway between Beirut and the Israel-Lebanese border.

Hezbollah again denied Israel’s right to exist on the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7. There is no place for Israel “in our region and in our social, cultural and human structure,” the militia said. With the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Islamist Hamas carried out a “heroic effort” that will have “historic effects and strategic consequences” for the Middle East.

Lebanon: Firefighters killed in attack
Meanwhile, according to Lebanese information, ten firefighters were killed in an Israeli airstrike on an administrative building in the southern Lebanese city of Bint Jbeil. The Ministry of Health explained on Monday that these are provisional figures.

In Lebanon, telecommunications services have also been disrupted due to repeated Israeli attacks in various parts of the country. Networks in the capital Beirut and in the areas around Tyre, Sidon and Nabatiyeh were among those affected, said the organization NetBlocks, which is best known for monitoring internet blocks. Internet connections were lost in these regional networks.

A mass exodus has begun in southern Lebanon, displacing more than a million people. In the Gaza Strip, a large part of the 2.3 million inhabitants had to give up their homes, many are waiting in tent camps and the supply situation is dramatic. The escalation of the conflict is fueling growing concerns that it could lead to a conflagration in the Middle East, especially as Iran recently fired nearly 200 missiles into Israel. There are fears that a direct war will break out between the two states, which could also involve the US, Israel’s main ally.
