Accelerator and brake – evil curse? Parking lot with swapped pedals

Date:

Last Sunday, not for the first time, a car fell into the depths in the parking lot at the so-called Kanzelkehre on Achenseestrasse in Tyrol. And again the accident had the same reason: the driver confused the gas and brake.

This parking lot on Achenseestraße in Wiesing (Schwaz district) seems to be “witchy”. Not only because two cars have crashed in almost the same place in the past two years, but mainly because of the reason: in both cases the accelerator pedal was confused with the brake pedal.

First accident of this kind in 2022
The first accident of this type occurred in May 2022. A then 15-year-old German wanted to park a car in the Kanzelkehre parking lot as part of an L17 training run. Her mother (37) was sitting next to her in the car.

Braking attempt failed
The 15-year-old crossed a curb and then tried to brake. The braking attempt failed because the young woman pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The result: the car then drove four meters down the dike below the parking lot. No injuries were reported, but the Wiesing fire brigade had to secure and rescue the car.

Déjà vu experience on Sunday
Last Sunday, the Wiesinger Florianis around Commander Andreas Rofner experienced a déjà vu experience: the same fatal mix-up of the pedals happened to an Israeli (79) in a rental car with automatic transmission. As a result, the car fell seven meters down the steep embankment into the forest, with four holidaymakers inside.

Serious material damage
Three people were then able to free themselves from the car and one person had to be rescued from the vehicle by the Wiesing volunteer fire brigade. As in 2022, there were no injuries, but there was serious material damage.

Walking path directly below the parking lot
It is a miracle that no one was injured. “A hiking trail starts directly below the parking lot,” says fire chief Andreas Rofner. Shortly before the accident there were still hikers in the area. And during the fire brigade’s rescue operation, countless walkers and cyclists also passed by.

Ask about insurance
Given the accidents in the busy parking lot near a busy walking or cycling path, the call for protection is now getting louder. “A guardrail at the unsecured point would be good,” emphasizes Andreas Rofner.
