A 53-year-old cyclist was killed by a falling tree during a severe hailstorm in Moosburg an der Isar (Bavaria). A motorist and pedestrian were also injured in the storm. Police reported blocked roads and destroyed power lines.
The man from Baden-Württemberg and his wife were surprised by the storm on a bicycle path in Moosburg on Monday evening. Police say a falling tree hit him and killed him. The companion was unharmed. A 15-year-old was seriously injured by a tree on the banks of the Amper and had to be flown by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Munich. The rescue team had another mission in Au in the Hallertau, where a car had been hit by a tree. The driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
400 task forces
About 400 emergency services were on the way due to the storm. Roads and sidewalks had to be closed because there were many hailstones on them. Train traffic between Freising and Landshut in Lower Bavaria was hampered by storm damage until Tuesday.
Electricity went out across the board
Another consequence was a widespread power outage in Moosburg an der Isar and several neighboring communities. “It’s all in the dark,” says the spokeswoman for the district office. The Technical Relief Agency set up an emergency power supply for retirement homes where the fans had failed. The district called on residents to keep their own power consumption via rechargeable batteries to an absolute minimum and to help the neighbors where necessary.
Moosburg an der Isar is located in the Upper Bavarian district of Freising and has about 20,000 inhabitants.
