Protection against China – Australia wants to buy nuclear submarines from the US

Date:

Australia wants to buy up to five nuclear submarines from the US. The plan is to purchase three Virginia-class nuclear-powered and conventionally armed submarines, with an option to purchase two more submarines, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday aboard the Air Force One presidential jet. In addition, Australia, the US and Great Britain want to jointly develop a new generation of nuclear submarines.

The announcement was made ahead of a meeting of US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in San Diego, California. The three countries established the Indo-Pacific security alliance AUKUS in September 2021 – a response to China’s growing dominance in the region.

The central element of this alliance are nuclear-powered submarines, with which Australia aims to modernize its fleet. During the formation of AUKUS, Australia let a long-planned multibillion-dollar submarine deal with France fall through. This had provoked indignation from the French government and temporarily strained relations between Paris and Washington.
