Plans revealed – Kahlenberg: the facts about the mega ropeway project

Date:

New attempt for the Kahlenberg cable car mega project: The operator is now showing its plans, but the city of Vienna is against it. The “crown” has all the details.

When mysterious measurements were recently made in the slipstream under the Leopoldsberg, great excitement arose. The Krone report quickly brought clarity. The mega-project “Kahlenbergbahn” is back and probably clearer and more concrete than ever before.

Behind it is Hannes Dejaco of the MagMagGroup. And these are the facts about the planned mega project: in less than 20 minutes you have to take a gondola from the underground station Heiligenstadt via the Danube Island to the Kahlenberg. The planned route is 5.6 kilometers long and crosses the Danube twice. 10 people fit in a panoramic gondola. Up to 1800 people can be transported per hour Vienna’s home mountain.

But how does the cable car fit into the green landscape?
The new route must cause as little nuisance as possible for local residents. How that will succeed in this huge construction project will probably remain a mystery. In an interview with the “Krone”, the businessman admits that he should have disclosed facts earlier. In any case, he sees his cable car as a form of public transport and as a tourist attraction. His bizarre statement: “But no one has to be afraid of the Chinese, who then run through the vineyards there,” says Dejaco.

Explosive: In 2015, MA 49 gave written approval for the project.

“Fundamental content concerns”
A change of mayor later, the city wants nothing more to do with that. Now the position on the planned project is at least a little clearer. When asked by “Krone”, the office of climate councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) claimed that “the city’s fundamental concerns about the content” had not changed.

Where gondolas already criss-cross the cities
A popular tourist attraction across the Thames in London, in the mountainous metropolis of La Paz (Bolivia) also a popular means of transport for the local population: the funicular through the city. On the Atlantic island of Madeira (Portugal), soar over gardens and banana plantations to the beautiful botanical garden. In Barcelona, Catalonia, the funicular takes you from the water to the heights of Montjuic. Passengers get a fantastic view over the harbor and the city.

These are – randomly chosen – some international examples of urban cable cars. Unlike in ski resorts, there are other things to take into account in the densely built-up area. For example, where is there enough space for posts and stations? Are residential buildings and passers-by at risk during storms and strong winds? There have been protests here and there during the construction of the railways. Environmentalists chained themselves to trees.

In Haifa (Israel), the gondola ride is part of public transport and is integrated into the conventional public transport ticket. It leads from the city to the famous university. The NEOS want something similar for Vienna. A cable car from Ottakring (U3) to the new private university in Steinhof.

But what is happening in Vienna now? There is a concession that was already granted in March 2022 by the Federal Administrative Court. The building permit procedure will start in the summer. An agreement has already been reached with five of the six property owners. Only the city is missing. But without them it will probably remain a pipe dream.
