A 24-year-old German died in a kayaking accident in East Tyrol on Thursday. The young man was traveling with two compatriots in the whitewater river Schwarzach.
The three experienced German kayakers (24, 31 and 24 years old) entered the whitewater river Schwarzach in the Bavaria Alm area in St. Jakob in Defereggental. Near the sewage treatment plant in St. Veit in the Defereggental, two of the kayakers capsized when a tree trunk got stuck in the river.
Two colleagues escaped lightly
The 31-year-old managed to save himself from the river on his own, a 24-year-old kayaker was able to get out of his kayak and hold on to a tree stump in the middle of the river, from where he was rescued by the emergency helicopter with the help of a rope and taken to Lienz Hospital with significant injuries.
Helplessly broken off
The second kayaker, also 24, was able to get out of his kayak but was then dragged along the Schwarzach River for about five kilometers before being rescued from the river by firefighters around 3:15 p.m. The emergency doctor immediately started resuscitation measures, but these were to no avail and the man succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Big commitment
The Sankt Veit volunteer fire brigade with 28 emergency services, the Hopfgarten volunteer fire brigade with 23 emergency services, the Lienz water rescue service with eight emergency services, the C7 emergency medical helicopter, the Lienz Red Cross with nine emergency services, including an emergency doctor, the crisis intervention team, the Matrei police with five officers and the Lienz police with one officer.
