Politicians’ salaries are like salaries in communist countries: their levelness and their disconnect from any measurable performance increase the danger of sloppiness and passivity. Moreover, elected politicians should be protected at least for the duration of a parliamentary term; and when a representative is already at the end of his career and not just at the beginning, the temptation to enjoy la dolce vita in the House of Representatives is probably even greater. But does this mean that politicians earn too much?
