An unusually high quality of life with unusually unfriendly people – according to the “Expat Insider Study 2022”, this is the impression that foreign workers working in this country have of Austria. Despite top ratings in travel and transportation as well as environment and climate, it ranks only 24th out of 52 places.
In the survey among 12,000 expats, Austria scored excellently in the areas “Travel and Transport” (second place), “Health and Well-being” (third place) and “Environment and Climate” (fifth place). 94 percent of respondents also appreciate the extensive travel options in Germany, 91 percent are satisfied with the local public transport offer (73 percent in a global comparison). 83 percent of those surveyed describe medical treatments as affordable and more than three quarters say they have easy access to health care.
In addition, expats consider Austria to be an ecologically clean country with many sporting opportunities, and the cost of living is also considered reasonable – Austria ranks 16th out of 52 in the personal finance index. 85 percent describe the economic situation in Germany as positive, and almost every second respondent considers housing affordable – as opposed to the global average of 39 percent.
Second to last place in kindness
A top position would have been realistic for Austria – were it not for the “extreme unfriendliness” of the population. Ranked 49th in “Settling in Abroad”, Austria is one of the world’s worst-rated places to stay for expats. In the “Friendliness” category, the Alpine Republic finished in second place. Expats also find it difficult to make friends in Austria.
Forty-one percent describe locals as unfriendly toward foreigners, more than double the global average (18 percent). 28 percent of those polled felt “unwelcome” in Austria at all – 16 percent in a global comparison.
The top five stand out in particular when it comes to settling abroad and personal finances. Kuwait is among the lowest rated countries in the world by expats, both in each individual index and overall.
