Workers fled – man poured petrol on himself in Vienna office

Date:

Dramatic scenes Monday morning in a Viennese office: a 41-year-old man poured petrol on himself and threatened to set himself on fire. The employees fled and immediately called the police.

The 41-year-old wanted to speak to the director of the real estate company in the Mariahilf district. The manager owes him money, according to the man, who had a can of petrol and a lighter with him.

With the petrol poured over and the lighter in hand, the man threatened to set himself on fire. The alarmed officers of the Kopernikusgasse police station managed to get him to throw away the lighter. The 41-year-old was subsequently arrested and taken to a hospital on strong suspicions of endangering himself or others.

The director of the real estate agency told officials he had a business relationship with the 41-year-old years ago. However, he ended it due to “lack of performance,” as the Vienna State Police Directorate said on Tuesday.
