Russian President Vladimir Putin meets with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on July 19 in Tehran. At the summit of the three heads of state in Iran, talks are scheduled to improve the situation in civil war-torn Syria. There will also be a bilateral meeting with Erdogan.
Russia intervened militarily in the Syrian war in 2015. This turned the tide in favor of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, whose forces were able to recapture some areas.
Shortly before announcing Putin’s trip to Iran, the United States said it had indications that Iran wanted to support Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine.
This is Putin’s second foreign trip since the war began on February 24. At the end of June, Putin traveled to Central Asia.
