Humor after data breach – BBC warns of 404 degrees in England in weather report

Date:

Unfortunately, extreme weather events are not uncommon due to climate change – but fortunately they were not as radical as the British broadcaster BBC predicted on Thursday. Due to a disturbance, temperatures of 404 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of more than 20,000 kilometers per hour were predicted.

British broadcaster BBC has apologized for the error in its weather report, which predicted temperatures and storms of gigantic proportions.

The broadcaster tried to respond to the error with humor: “Don’t worry, people! “Hurricane Milton has not yet reached us in Britain,” BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor said on the online service X, referring to the tropical storm in the US.

The message from the weather presenter on X:

“No reason to panic”
The wildly exaggerated figures are due to a ‘data error’, Taylor explains. The technicians are working to solve the problem. “There is no need to panic and buy plywood and candles,” the weatherman added.

A weather graph on Wednesday incorrectly showed wind speeds of more than 20,000 kilometers. In addition, technical problems in the weather app and on the BBC website meant that night temperatures of 404 degrees Celsius were forecast for the central English city of Nottingham. Thursday was more likely to see colder air, rain and drizzle in the south and stormy showers on the east coast.

BBC asks for patience
The BBC’s weather department apologized for “some data issues with our app and website”. The team is “working hard to resolve the issue quickly,” a statement said. “Sorry, please be patient,” it said.

The error brought back memories of a memorable 1987 forecast: at the time, BBC weatherman Michael Fish commented on an earlier viewer warning of an approaching hurricane, saying: “Don’t worry, it won’t be true a few hours later.” the south-east of England was hit by the worst storm in three centuries.
