Refuges in need – Small alpine clubs are doing great things for the mountains

Date:

What is now Austria’s smallest alpine club was founded 145 years ago. The people of Krummholz show a tireless commitment to mountain conservation, but storms and financial worries sap their strength. The Alpine Club and Nature Friends of Styria know where the problem lies in the Alps.

“It was a difficult year for the people of Krummholz,” says Walter Bastl. Since 1976 he has been a member of Austria’s smallest alpine club and his volunteer work is far from over. Because the Alpine Society Krummholz has its hands full with its work area between Gröbming and Schladming – from renovating their refuge to maintaining and marking the trails, especially after this summer of bad weather. “Not a nice Oktoberfest,” as Bastl says.
