Pope Francis is considering a trip to Ukraine. On the flight to Malta, a journalist traveling with him asked him if he would consider an invitation to visit the Ukrainian capital Kiev. “Yes, that’s on the table,” the 85-year-old head of the Catholic Church replied Saturday morning. Francis has now arrived in the smallest EU country, Malta, for his two-day trip.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko had already invited the Argentine to come to the war-torn country. Pope Francis condemned the war in Ukraine in numerous public appearances and sent representatives of the Catholic Church there from the Vatican.
The plane carrying the Vatican delegation and journalists on board landed at Luqa International Airport on Saturday morning. Meetings with Maltese politicians and the local church, as well as a catamaran trip to the island of Gozo await the Holy Father on Saturday.
Focus of the journey on migration
Central to the 85-year-old’s journey is the theme of migration. On Sunday, the Argentinian wants to visit a center where about 50 migrants are housed. Francis follows John Paul II (1990 and 2001) and Benedict XVI. (2010) the third Pope to visit Malta.
