In the northern German city of Hamburg, the discovery of a World War II bomb on Saturday night led to extensive firefighting operations. Due to the discovery of unexploded ordnance from the Second World War, the busy entertainment area around the Sternschanze was partially evacuated on Saturday evening. Shortly after midnight the bomb was successfully defused.
Several thousand people had to leave their homes. Police officers asked visitors to restaurants, bars and pubs in the trendy area to leave the security area. The bomb was found during construction work on the grounds of a primary school.
Police said an emergency shelter had been set up at Allee High School for all those affected. The German Red Cross was also deployed.
The evacuation measures in the Sternschanze area were not completed until around 11:30 p.m. The police had reported the bomb discovery early in the evening and asked “anyone on their way to the Schanzenviertel” to “turn around or not even set out”. Apparently the evacuation of the restricted area went smoothly and smoothly.
