The couple was traveling in a twin-engine turboprop plane from Henderson, Nevada, to Monterey, California, when the 78-year-old suffered a medical emergency.
His wife, who had no flying experience, then reportedly took the controls. With the help of air traffic controllers who gave her detailed instructions by radio, the woman managed to land the small plane safely in Bakersfield, California.
Man died in hospital
Her husband was then taken to a hospital but died there, the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote, citing the man’s company. Both the woman and the Beechcraft King Air 90 aircraft survived the landing unharmed.
“Not seen in my entire career”
“As far as I know, this is unprecedented,” Ron Brewster, director of airports in Kern County, California, told CBS. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire career.”
