Since September 30, a ghost has been keeping our authorities on edge with a creepy series of threatening emails. The state security service is now investigating an “old acquaintance” (20) in Switzerland…
The young man had already made headlines on May 22 this year when he threatened the police station on Nietzschestrasse in Linz by telephone: “The whole house will explode within five minutes!” Immediately, 200 people – mainly officers, but also civilians and administrative staff – had moved to evacuate the building. Investigations by the state security service subsequently led to the trail of a 20-year-old Swiss citizen. It turned out that he had called from the psychoclinic where he was being treated!
Major operations, evacuations
Just four months later, a veritable wave of email bomb threats swept across Austria. Large-scale operations have been taking place since September 30, with evacuations to train stations, schools and shopping centers. The crime scene was spread throughout Germany, from Vorarlberg to Burgenland.
To date, 27 anonymous written threats have been received. One of them was even ‘forgotten’ in the mailbox of the Tyrolean State Police. Police director Helmut Tomac spoke of ‘human error’ and the otherwise very conscientious officer received verbal instructions.
As new research by the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence (DSN) together with the public prosecutor’s offices of Linz and Graz has now shown, no Islamists are behind this – but the 20-year-old, who is also known to the police in our neighboring country, is another urgent suspect!
Arrest warrant for the mentally ill with no consequences
In any case, the judiciary has issued a European arrest warrant, but he remains at large in Switzerland. What’s next? However, the Swiss will not extradite their own citizens. This means that he will be tried in the neighboring country. But legal consequences are probably impossible!
Austria will probably be left with the costs
Because the young serial offender is mentally ill and is in constant treatment. Domestic security authorities will almost certainly bear the costs of the false alarms. If you use an hourly rate of around 34 euros per officer, operations of this size can quickly amount to tens of thousands of euros. Expensive fun.
At least in the future, psychoclinics in Switzerland must ensure that the young man does not have access to a computer or a mobile phone. Otherwise, the next threatening series from the ‘bomb brain’ will follow soon.
