That’s what’s behind it – Asylum: Italy leading a new “Guantanamo”?

Date:

There is much excitement: Italy plans to barrack migrants in two major centers in Albania while their asylum claims are examined. The right-wing Meloni government is happy with the 670 million euro coup, human rights organizations fear a new ‘Guantánamo’. Krone+ knows what it looks like in the controversial camps.

Right-wing populist Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is absolutely delighted. The Italian government-funded migrant centers on Albanian territory are an “innovative solution” in dealing with the flow of migrants and in the fight against smuggling. The Italian naval ship Libra left on Monday to take the first group of migrants to the newly established refugee centers.

Over the past ten years, one million migrants have come to Italy via the Mediterranean route. 65,000 were deported back to their home countries. The rest stayed or moved to other countries.

Controversial asylum plan
Meloni’s controversial plan is as follows: refugees rescued in international waters will be taken to Albania. First to the Adriatic port of Shengjin, where there is the first reception center. Here, as soon as the migrants leave the ship, they are examined, identified, fingerprinted and provided with food.
