Following the Iranian attacks on Israel on October 1, the Pentagon announced on Sunday that it would deploy a THAAD battery and associated troops to Israel. The modern missile defense system is intended to strengthen the air defense of the Mediterranean country.
According to the Pentagon, Washington is sending a battery and troops to operate it. The THAAD battery (the abbreviation stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) detects targets up to 3,000 kilometers away. It is one of the US military’s most powerful missile defense weapons.
The aim is to strengthen Israel’s air defenses after recent heavy missile attacks by Iran, the Pentagon’s Defense Department said. The move underlines the United States’ strong commitment to Israel’s defense, the report said.
Biden: System “to defend Israel”
US President Joe Biden said he was sending the system “to defend Israel”. The country’s air defenses need to be strengthened after Iran’s missile attacks. A Pentagon spokesperson added that the deployment of a THAAD battery would strengthen Israel’s integrated air defense system.
In view of the conflict in the Middle East, the United States already deployed a battery of the THAAD missile defense system in the region last year, but not in Israel itself.
