1457 Euro usury – Cemeteries: Even death is getting more expensive

Date:

Only death is free? Are you kidding, are you serious when you say that! Gabriela F. (69) would now have to pay 1457 euros for the extension of the family grave in Vienna-Meidling – twice as much as before.

When Mrs. Gabriela F. (69) received an invoice from Friedhöfe Wien GmbH a few days ago, she had to swallow. She would now have to pay 1,457 euros for the extension of her family grave at the Südwestfriedhof in Meidling – twice as much as before! When asked, she was told that “we wanted green cemeteries” and that she had a stone slab on her grave, so the fee would be double.

“My family has never heard of such an arrangement in the 81 years we’ve been using the grave,” said the angry retiree. In response to a “Krone” request, the Vienna cemeteries confirmed that the prices for tombs with a lid were deliberately higher. People would like to make a “contribution against soil sealing”.

“Against soil sealing”
“Our 46 cemeteries together are about the size of Vienna’s 20th district. The preservation of our greenery therefore plays an important role in the climate of our city. We spend a lot of time and resources on breaking down paved areas such as concrete paths in order to prevent soil sealing in every possible way,” according to the Viennese cemeteries.

The burial rate also depends on the type of grave and location. More favorable are those locations that are not in the immediate vicinity of the entrance to the cemetery, as well as graves without a roof.
