First, a thief broke into a business premises in Retz, Lower Austria, on Sunday evening. He then short-circuited a wheel loader and a manure spreader and left a trail of destruction as far as the Czech Republic, more than thirty kilometers away. The perpetrator managed to escape on foot.
Surveillance cameras at the biogas plant “BioPower” in Retz should now make it clear who the suspect could be. It is clear that he smashed a window in the office on Saturday evening around 7.30 pm, emptied a fire extinguisher and threw various technical equipment on the floor. He then went to the parking lot and smashed the side window of a 29-ton wheel loader.
A vehicle weighing tons crushed everything
It is unclear why the thief also connected a manure spreader (nine tons) to the vehicle that was completely unsuitable for the wheel loader and front loader. He short-circuited the heavy vehicle and rolled it over a 150-meter-long fence at the biogas plant. On the way to the Czech Republic, the unknown man caused various damage, including to vineyards.
Manure spreader tipped into the garden
Towards the end of his rampage of destruction, the wheel loader thief came across a police checkpoint, prompting a wild chase. This extended to Prosiměřice in the Czech Republic, about 33 kilometers from Retz. Along the way, the gunman hit obstacles several times, including a house wall and a garden wall, before losing the manure spreader, which fell over and came to rest in a garden.
More than 100,000 euros in damage
A gas station was also demolished, but it remained closed. “We are glad that no one was injured,” the directors of the biogas company said with relief. The damage, which has amounted to around 100,000 euros so far, is enormous, including to the surrounding vineyards. However, operations have been secured and can continue. However, there is no trace of the perpetrator. He managed to escape on foot.
