He was responsible for the fight against the Mexican drug cartels for years – and accepted millions in bribes. Former Mexican Security Minister Genaro García Luna has now been sentenced to 38 years in prison in the US for his collaboration with the cartel of powerful drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.
The responsible judge in New York also imposed a fine of two million dollars (approximately 1.8 million euros) on Luna, the US Department of Justice announced. He is said to have accepted millions in bribes from the Sinaloa cartel.
The 56-year-old former Minister of Security was the highest-ranking official in the fight against drug cartels in the government of then President Felipe Calderón between 2006 and 2012. In 2019, he was arrested in the city of Dallas, Texas. After a trial lasting about four weeks, a jury found him guilty in February.
The same judge as the El Chapo trial
Prosecutors had accused García Luna of protecting the cartel’s drug smuggling operation for more than a decade. The defendant’s defense, on the other hand, argued that Luna had always been honorable and was now a victim of the revenge of the criminals he had put behind bars in collaboration with the US. ‘El Chapo’ was sentenced to life in prison by the same judge in 2019.
