A polar cyclone, an extratropical cyclone, is currently causing chaos and destruction in several regions of Italy. Numerous places have been flooded. One death has also been reported.
The north of Italy in particular experiences extreme weather conditions. The second highest alert level currently applies in five regions: Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Tuscany and Veneto.

A man lost his life near Genoa when he fell into the water while picking mushrooms in a forest, reports rainews.it. Floods led to the closure of train stations and parts of the highway. Schools had to be closed.
Video shows masses of water
A video shared on X impressively shows the masses of water falling from a car bridge in Sori near Genoa into the river below.
The situation is also critical in parts of Tuscany, especially around Siena. Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall – in some areas up to 100 mm of water fell per hour – caused streams and rivers to overflow their banks.
Water levels critical
The region’s president, Eugenio Giani, warned on Friday that some rivers could reach critical levels later on Friday.
In Siena, flooding led to the closure of the train station, paralyzing train traffic to Florence. A shopping center flooded. The situation remains tense.
Man clinging to road signs
Mayor Nicoletta Fabio ordered all schools closed on Friday. In the Livorno area the storm flooded cellars, streets and houses. A man was just rescued from floods as he desperately clung to road signs.
No relaxation on Saturday
The Italian weather center warns of severe weather in the northeast and the center of the south on Saturday. Rain is expected in large parts of Veneto and Friuli. There is a high risk of storms in Sicily. An improvement in the weather is expected between Sunday and Monday. Just a few months ago, Italy was hit by a flood disaster.
A polar cyclone is responsible for this current bizarre weather and is expected to move further south.
