According to South Korean information, North Korea supports the Russian army in Ukraine and is already actively involved in the fighting. Specialists would operate North Korean missiles at the front. Videos should also show the training of units in Russia.
About 1,500 North Korean special forces left for Russia on Russian ships. North Korea wants to send a total of 12,000 soldiers to Russia, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
The presidential office in Seoul said it was monitoring the transfer of North Korean soldiers. Accordingly, the transports began on October 8. There were initially no comments from North Korea and Russia about the information.
South Korea sees a serious security threat
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held an unscheduled security meeting with intelligence and military leaders to assess North Korean troops’ involvement in the war in Ukraine. “The participants shared the view that the current situation (…) poses a serious security threat not only to our country but also to the international community,” the report said.
South Korean intelligence reported that AI-powered facial recognition programs were used to identify North Korean soldiers sent to Russia. They were given Russian uniforms and weapons and given false Russian passports. They were taken to barracks in eastern Russia and trained there.
There is said to be footage of North Koreans training in Russia:
The spy agency said it was likely they would be transferred to the front after preparations were completed. North Korea also supplied artillery shells, anti-tank weapons and missiles to Russia.
NATO sees no evidence of presence
The US military think tank ISW (Institute for the Study of War) also recently reported that several thousand North Korean soldiers had arrived in Russia and were being prepared for deployment in Ukraine. NATO chief Mark Rutte said there is so far no evidence of the presence of North Korean soldiers in Russia.
Pyongyang is already massively supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine with weapons and ammunition. According to South Korean intelligence, the country, which is largely isolated internationally, mainly supplies artillery shells and short-range missiles.
Both Russia and North Korea have been denying possible arms deliveries for months. The government in Moscow has also dismissed previous speculation that North Korean soldiers could be deployed in Ukraine.
Collaboration has increased significantly
Russia and North Korea have significantly increased their cooperation since the summit between heads of state Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un last year. According to South Korea’s latest data, North Korea has 1.28 million active soldiers and has promoted the development of a range of ballistic missiles and a nuclear arsenal.
Only in June did Moscow and Pyongyang sign a treaty on comprehensive strategic cooperation, which also includes mutual assistance in the event of an attack by a third country.
The Kremlin is also working to further intensify nuclear intimidation against the West. Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Friday, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, that the commanders of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces are testing the readiness of their unit stationed in the city of Bologoye. The exercise will include maneuvers and the use of Yars-type mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles, the report said.
