At the end of May, two men aged 29 and 66 were brutally beaten and the 66-year-old subsequently died in hospital. The background to the crime: a dispute between two feuding families. After a lengthy search, the three suspects were arrested in Serbia. But now the trio is loose again.
The accusation against the three suspects is serious. The trio allegedly brutally attacked their two opponents during a family party, knocking them down with punches and kicks. A 66-year-old man subsequently died in hospital and his 29-year-old son suffered serious injuries. A witness called the police, after which the three fled in a car.
Murder investigation
The Serbian nationals Sasa K., Milovan D. and Sasa J. were wanted for a long time and a European arrest warrant was issued. But after the trio was arrested in Serbia, the suspects have now been released, lawyer Nikolaus Rast of the trio confirmed on Friday. The accusation: a dispute that resulted in death.
Causal relationship “undetectable”
From lawyer Rast’s perspective, the suspects are acquitted by a medical report confirming that the 66-year-old victim had heart problems. According to the report, the man died as a result of “the consequences of cardiac arrest due to cardiovascular failure.” It is said that a causal link between the impact of violence and the occurrence of death “cannot be proven”.
The incident in Vösendorf was preceded by a family quarrel, Rast emphasizes. “The other side” started an argument and his clients fought back, the trio’s lawyer said. “No one here has ever wanted to kill anyone.” The reason for the escape: According to Rast, the suspect left Austria after receiving death threats.
Serbian authorities have not yet officially responded to whether the suspects will be prosecuted. The Wiener Neustadt Public Prosecutor’s Office is still waiting for an answer on this, spokesman Erich Habitzl said on Friday.
